MOUNTAIN SKILLS TRAINING
MS training is divided into three blocks, MS1, MS2 and MS Assessment. MS1 and MS2 are the basic training blocks covering all aspects of hillwalking that the candidate will require to become a self-sufficient hill user These courses are designed to teach all of the fundamental skills of mountain navigation and to allow people to hike safety and sustainably in Ireland’s Mountains.
Mountain Skills are nationally accredited by Mountaineering Ireland and Bord Oiliúint Sléibhe.
MS1 and MS2 are the basic training blocks covering all aspects of hillwalking that the candidate will need to become a self-sufficient. MS 1 and 2 training and assessment are essential for anyone wishing to progress onto the Mountain Leader Scheme.
Mountain skills 1 and 2 will give you an introduction to a range of essential skills for hill walking. It allows you to learn the necessary skills in mountain safety, navigation, hazard awareness, and personal equipment, along with a new understanding of the mountain environment, so on completing the course you will be able to safely hike with confidence in the mountains.
The courses run over two consecutive days, indoors and outdoors with informal lectures and discussions and many practical sessions on the hills.

MOUNTAIN SKILLS TRAINING 1 (FOR BEGINNERS)
- Map reading and basic navigational techniques
- Recognition of natural features and contour interpretation
- Mountain hazards
- Personal equipment and clothing
- Measuring distance on a map and ground.
MOUNTAIN SKILLS TRAINING 2 (FOR IMPROVING ON MS1)
- Understanding and use of a compass
- Route planning and route cards
- Night navigation
- How to hike on steep ground safely
- Emergency procedures and mountain rescue.

WHAT TO BRING
Lunch – Bring your own lunch and tea, as we will try getting as much in as possible. So we will eat lunch on the go or and a short stop.
