Mountain Skills 1

This course is all about allowing you to build your skill set and your confidence, in order to have a clear understanding of how to keep yourself safe and in control on the mountains. The course include 2 Full days of detailed lessons, mostly outdoors on the trails and mountains with some on line classroom learning, in order to understand some basic theory behind what you are about to learn. You will learn the necessary skills to give you confidence and the freedom to walk new routes and mountain ranges. This includes, understanding Maps and compass, Mountain Safety, Clothing and Equipment, Mountain travel and Route cards.

Overview

  • Registration is required with Mountaineering Ireland.
  • One registration with M.I. gives you access to all of the Mountain Skills Scheme courses. Registration is free for under 18s and €28 for adults. This fee contributes towards the administration and quality assurance of the Mountain Skills Scheme, gives you access to DLOG (a digital logbook for recording your activities) and material to help you develop as a hill walker.
  • In registering you will give consent for Mountaineering Ireland to hold your data and details of training completed and assessment outcome.
  • If you are already a member of Mountaineering Ireland and register for the scheme, details of your training and assessment will be automatically updated on your DLOG.
  • There is no requirement to join Mountaineering Ireland, but there is a cheaper membership offer of €35 at the point of registration, should you wish to join.
  • Successful completion of the Mountain Skills Assessment is a register requirement for the Mountain Leader Award.
  • Completion of Mountain Skills training part 1 or 2 is one way to access registration for the Lowland Leader Award.

  • On both days we will be on the hills,
  • We cover some theory on both days but generally its walking and navigating, please bring along a notebook and pen .
  • We will have a pre course zoom meet on Wednesday evening before the course, to gain some early insights.

  • Bring a packed lunch and drink for each day.
  • Our instructors are qualified in remote emergency care and wilderness first aid.
  • A general level of fitness Is required.
  • All our instructors are experienced, qualified, registered and insured.

CANCELLATION POLICY

  • A cancellation fee of 100% applies for cancellations made less than 72hrs in advance, or in case of no-show.
  • A cancellation fee of 50% applies for cancellations made less than 10 Days in advance.
  • No cancellation fee applies for cancellations made 14 days or more days in advance.
  • Waterproof Jacket and
  • trousers, hill walking boots, walking trousers/tracksuit bottoms/leggings (avoid cotton and no jeans) base layer- top/tee shirt/fleece, take some spare tops (as lots of standing around outside) if you feel the cold, mid layer- fleece, hat and gloves and backpack.  and 1.5 litres water.
  • Maps OSIi 56 1:50 000 and East/west map Dublin mountains 1:25 000
  • Compass Silva expedition 4 if possible.
  • Notebook and pen
