We are heading for the true Wild, on the Wild Atlantic way on, the remote costal area in north co. Mayo. We will hike on ancient blanket bogs whilst on the edge of stunning cliffs for our walks this weekend. Arriving down and meeting at our accommodation for 3 of . We will head out for a short walk around the amazing Downpatrick head with all its incredible sights.
Next day it’s a 30 min drive to Ceathru Thaidhg and the magical children of lir loop walk. “The finest sustained coastal walk in western Ireland, with a profusion of precipitous cliffs, crags, caves, chasms and islands along the remote North Mayo coast“. (Lonely Planet Walking in Ireland 1999) .On the way back to Ballycastle we will call into a really great find one of the tallest Ogham stones in Ireland.
ITINERARY
DAY 1 / ARRIVE IN BALLYCASTLE CO. MAYO
Arrive at your accommodation and settle into your room for 3oc. Rooms may not be available until early afternoon. We will then head for our first walk of the weekend , the short but stunningly beautiful Downpatrick head . Once finished we will head back to Healy’s pub for a drink and some food and chat about tomorrows hike.
DAY 2 /CEATHRU THAIDHG AND THE CHILDREN OF LIR LOOP WALK.
Our guided walking tour takes us out from your accommodation and back into the history of time with an amazing costal walk on the wilds of Mayo’s forgotten northern coast. You won’t find a more spectacular, or apparently undiscovered loop walk in all of Ireland than this one. With its array of precipitous cliffs, crags, caves, chasms and islands, breath-taking clifftop views over the stunning Broadhaven Bay, dizzying heights to scale, and also a bird’s eye view of the Stags of Broadhaven, this route will leave you awestruck with its natural, rugged beauty. Feel the wind in your hair and the sea air on your skin, and feel alive in Ceathru Thaidhg.

DAY 3 / CEIDE FIELDS AND DEPART.
Sunday after breakfast we will visit the world renowned Ceidi fields Beneath the wild bog lands of north Mayo lies a system of fields, dwelling areas and megalithic tombs which together make up the most extensive Stone Age monument in the world.
The stone-walled fields, extending over hundreds of hectares, are the oldest known globally, dating back almost 6,000 years. They are covered by a natural blanket bog with its own unique vegetation and wildlife.
